You can have the best anti-aging skincare regimen, but if you’re making these makeup mistakes that age you, as you get older, they may actually be aging you.
Yes, you read that right. And while it’s one thing to age gracefully, it’s quite another to unintentionally make ourselves look older than we actually are.
So how do you know if your makeup is aging you? Read on for a peek at some of the top seven makeup mistakes that age you, can make you look older than you are and how to avoid them.
Mistake #1: Not Using the Right Foundation
The foundation is an essential part of any woman’s makeup arsenal. But it can also be one of the trickiest to get right!
The biggest culprit is choosing a foundation that’s too matte and drying.
As we age, it’s normal for skin to lose collagen, elasticity and appear dryer. So it’s more important than ever to ensure you’re choosing a hydrating foundation.
Foundation that’s too dry can look cakey and settle into fine lines and wrinkles, making them more apparent. Instead, reach for a foundation that has a more glowy finish to it.
You’ll also want to be wary of using too much foundation. The foundation is meant to smooth out your skin and even out your complexion and texture, not mask the skin entirely!
For youthful, glowing skin, we love ILIA’s Super Serum Skin Tint. It’s hydrating and loaded with skin goodies like niacinamide, squalene and hyaluronic acid. It’s also very buildable in coverage and has SPF40.
Mistake #2: Skipping Primer
Do you prep your skin before applying foundation? If you’re skipping this makeup step, that’s another makeup mistake that may make you look older.
Makeup primer helps hydrate and prep the skin prior to applying foundation. It helps prevent your foundation from settling into lines, blurs pores, and gives an overall smoother, cleaner canvas to work on.
You can also shop for primers with skincare benefits and added glow. We like the Beautycounter Glow First Priming Serum. Some of its skincare ingredients include tripeptides and jojoba bubbles, which help hydrate the skin.
Mistake #3: Wearing Dark, Matte Lipstick
Fresh, glossy pink lips look good at any age. The reason? Well, they’re natural and youthful!
Conversely, dark matte lipstick will instantly age you. The simple reason is dark lipstick can appear harsh.
Matte lipsticks are also something to avoid as they tend to be drying, showing off every little fine line.
For a more youthful appearance, shop for hydrating lipstick or lip gloss in more natural tones.
You’ll also want to work on prepping that pout; keep your lips hydrated with an overnight treatment like the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask. You can also try exfoliating your lips with a lip scrubbing brush or product like Sara Happ’s The Lip Scrub.
For daytime, a simple swipe of Aquaphor can really do the trick. It’s an affordable drugstore find and layers well under lipstick!

Mistake #4: Neglecting Your Eyebrows
If your eyebrows are stuck in the 1990s, it’s time to re-evaluate. Skinny, sparse brows can definitely age you, while a fuller brow is more on trend for 2023 and beyond.
While techniques like brow lamination and microblading can help you get the look more permanently, they are more of an investment.
The good news is that you can easily touch up your brows at home with makeup!
We love the Anastasia brow kits for fuller-looking eyebrows. These are easy to use (even for beginners!) and can significantly impact your overall makeup look.
Mistake #5: Too Much Eye Makeup
Makeup trends, like any trends, come and go. And one that’s definitely out is heavy eye makeup.
If you’re still rimming your under eyes with black or blue eyeliner, it’s time to give it a rest. Not only is this inappropriate for daytime, it actually ages you by making your eyes look smaller!
Instead, try lining the waterline on the top of your eye, as this can help open the eye and make your lashes appear fuller.
If you still want a little definition on the bottom of your eye, try dipping an eyeliner brush into a brown eyeshadow and lining just the outer corner. This will help open your eye up so you look more refreshed and awake!
Another trick to try is using a white eyeliner pencil across the waterline of your bottom line. This can help make your eyes look more prominent.
Mistake #6: Going Overboard on Powder
Too much powder is easily one of the biggest makeup mistakes that age you. The powder can make your skin appear dryer and settle into the appearance of fine lines. Especially when the powder is applied around the eyes!
Instead of using powder all over your face, try using powder only on the areas that may need it, such as under the eyes, to set your concealer and T-zone if required.
A beauty blender or an angled-pressed powder puff can help you reach the inner corners of your eyes without leaving behind a big powdery mess.
Mistake #7: Forgetting Blush
If there’s one makeup item that can make anyone instantly look younger, it’s a little bit of blush! Rosy cheeks are youthful, and just a hint of color helps give off a nice, natural glow.
Skip the powder formulas for mature skin and pick up a liquid blush or balm. These are far more hydrating and give off a much more natural appearance.
The Kjaer Weis creamy blush is one we love, and it comes in gorgeous reusable packaging.
If you’re new to cream blushes and want something more user-friendly, try the Flush Balm Cream Blush by MERIT, which you can quickly swipe on and go.
